200g qsfp56 optical module and 200g qsfp-dd optical module are two mainstream solutions for 200g optical interconnection.Qsfp56 uses mainstream digital signal processors(DSPS)to help cloud data centers cope with severe challenges and realize more efficient optical interconnection with flexible expansion scale and low cost.This article will mainly introduce the optical module 200g qsfp56 packaging technology and the difference between qsfp56 packaging and qsfp28 and qsfp+packaging.

Overview of 200g qsfp56 optical module packaging technology

Before understanding the qsfp56 package,let’s take a look at the outline design of the qsfp package.Qsfp,namely Quad small form factor pluggable,refers to a four channel small hot pluggable SFP interface.Its original design purpose is to replace a single channel SFP optical module with a high-density optical module.Compared with SFP optical module,qsfp optical module has higher bandwidth.

The 40g qsfp+optical module and the 100g qsfp28 optical module developed on the basis of qsfp packaging have been gradually applied in the network deployment of high-density data centers.With the continuous growth of data center traffic,the demand for bandwidth is also getting higher and higher.Qsfp package types also have more external dimensions,such as 200g qsfp56 and 400g qsfp56-dd.

The 200g qsfp56 optical module is an upgraded version of the 40g qsfp+and 100g qsfp28 optical modules.It is an optical module specially designed for 200g Ethernet interconnection.Qsfp56 indicates that the transmission rate of 4x 50GB/s to 56gb/s can be transmitted in one qsfp package size.The qsfp56 optical module is also known as the 200g qsfp optical module.According to different transmission distances,the 200g qsfp56 optical module is divided into qsfp56 Cr,Sr,Dr,FR and LR,which can realize transmission at different distances on single-mode and multi-mode optical fibers.

In general,two 200g qsfp56 optical modules are respectively inserted into the corresponding switch ports,and then connected with a single-mode or multi-mode optical fiber to achieve a transmission rate of 200g.In addition,by inserting the qsfp56 DAC/AOC high-speed cable into the corresponding port,200g transmission can also be realized.If you want to realize 2x100g or 4x50g transmission,you can use 200g qsfp56 to 2x100g qsfp28 branch cable and 200g qsfp56 to 4x50g SFP 56 branch cable to realize.

Difference between qsfp56 vs qsfp28 vs qsfp+

In terms of name,qsfp56,qsfp28 and qsfp+optical modules have the same package type,but their transmission rate,modulation technology and interface are different.The following table lists the basic parameters of these types of optical modules:

It can be seen from the table that the optical module of qsfp56 package type can support 4x50g transmission to achieve a transmission rate of 200g.Qsfp+optical module is an upgraded version of qsfp optical module.It can support 4x10g transmission to realize 10G Ethernet,10g fibre channel and QDR Infiniband transmission.It can multiplex four channels to increase bandwidth and achieve a transmission rate of 40Gbps(10gbaud NRZ per channel).The qsfp28 optical module,like the qsfp+optical module,includes four optical transmitters and four optical receivers,supporting 4x25g transmission,thus achieving a transmission rate of 100g.

The biggest difference between qsfp56 package and qsfp+and qsfp28 package is that qsfp56 no longer adopts the previous NRZ modulation technology,but adopts the pam4 modulation technology.The transmission rate of each channel can reach 50g,and more data can be transmitted on the existing optical fiber,which is more suitable for application in the super large-scale data center network.

Transition from 200g qsfp56 to 400g qsfp-dd

With the rapid development of the data center,the demand for data transmission is also increasing,which promotes the development of the network to higher bandwidth and higher density.At present,a new generation of 400g optical module package type-400g qsfp-dd has appeared in the market.The”DD”here refers to double density,that is,the number of channels of 400g qsfp-dd has changed from 4 to 8,which can reach the transmission rate of 400g.

The size of the 400g qsfp-dd optical module is very similar to that of the 200g qsfp56 optical module,but the 400g qsfp-dd optical module can be backward compatible with the 40g qsfp+,100g qsfp28,200g qsfp56 and other qsfp packaged optical modules.In other words,as long as the switch supports it,the 200g qsfp56 optical module can work on the 400g qsfp-dd port.When the 200g qsfp56 optical module is used on the 400g qsfp-dd port,the port of the switch will be configured with a transmission rate of 200g instead of 400g.

Although qsfp-dd package is the most popular package type in the 400g Ethernet market at present,it does not mean that the qsfp56 package type is eliminated.For some data centers with less high speed requirements than 400g,it is still an ideal solution to deploy 200g Ethernet with 200g qsfp56 packaged optical modules.
